These disks are NEWLY
MANUFACTURED stock, made to our specifications. NOT "New Old Stock"
that may be over 15 years old.
If you digitize your own designs, or even if you just like to store
designs on floppy disks, you've probably noticed that the 720k disks
your machine demands that you use are pretty tough to find. And if you
do manage to find some, do you discover them to be problematic?
There is a reason for these problems. You see, technology
keeps improving at a continually accellerating pace. What was state of the art last year
is obsolete and unsupported today. As the floppy disk evolved, numerous new design
advances were created. The first floppies were eight inches across, then came the 5 1/4
inch models. Soon, a more reliable, smaller model in a hard-case was born. It was the
second generation of these newer disks - the Double-sided, Double-Density (DS/DD) disk -
that was quickly adopted by the commercial embroidery machine manufacturers as they
created new mediums for their machines to evolve from the use of paper tapes for storing
designs.
But soon, technology pushed the floppy disk to a newer
standard, the High-density disk (HD) that we still use today for transfering files and
other small data-containment jobs. It has a denser media and an extra hole punched into
it's case to differentiate it from it's predecessors. The HD disk has been the standard
for floppy disks for some time now, and most manufacturers see little reason to make DS/DD
disks anymore.
Some embroiderers own devices to punch a hole in the case of
HD disk cases to make their embroidery machines think that they are dealing with a DS/DD
disk. That rarely works well because the media inside the HD disk requires a stronger
magnetic pulse to write to the disk than a real DS/DD disk requires, so magnetic images
are barely written to the disk, and they degrade shortly after the disk is written.
In short, if your machine requires DS/DD disks, or if you
just like the stablity of storing your designs on the "less crowded" 720k
format, you'll need real DS/DD disks. Despite the difficulty in finding manufacturers of
these disks, as a software manufacturer, we still can get them. Also, because we are a
software manufacturer, we are able to get the highest-grade disks available, made for
automatic duplication equipment.
But even with the access we have to a higher-quality product,
we still found problems. In fact, we found that even with the best grade of disks on the
market, roughly 2% of all disks we received were faulty. So when we receive an order of
disks, we don't just put them on the shelves for delivery to you. We put every disk into
the hoppers of our automatic duplicating equipment and format them a second time. If they
fail, they go in the trash. If they pass, we're confident that they will serve you well
for a long time. SMR Software places it's One Year guarantee on every disk we sell. If any
disk you purchase from us proves defective, we will replace it at no charge.
